Ann 18 May 1536

The idea for these portraits originally started as a project to submit an image into the International Freemantle Portrait Prize.

In between enlisting the help of Bree Hartley (a local Actor) and crating the planed the image, it was cancelled so I decided to expand the project and make an entry into the 2021 Minnawarra Art Award.

After an exhaustive process of preparation, photography, editing and then the presentation I was reminded of the quote “Art is never finished only abandoned”

I was very pleased to have had this series of images accepted into the Minnawarra Art awards, as a triptych of a famous historical figure that was created with the help of the very talented Bree.

Anne Boleyn was without doubt Henrys best known wife, mostly because of the way she was tried and executed. This series of 3 images explores the emotion Anne must have felt on the 18 May 1536 the day before her execution.

For everything Anne was and no matter how busy she tried to keep herself or how much she tried to make light of her situation the reality of the event scheduled to happen the next day can’t have been far below the surface.

Reports from the time indicate that Anne revolved around a full gamut of emotions on this day, from strength and resilience, joviality, fear, despair and finally reflection.

This series was intended to capture just some of these emotions and invite the viewer to imagine how they may have felt in her situation.
